A workgroup consulted by LMC has released a draft plan for establishing a 24/7 sobering center with drop-off capability for first responders by the second half of 2025. The workgroup is comprised officials from Multnomah County, the Portland Mayor's Office, law enforcement, and medical organizations. The plan, funded by $150,000 from the county, outlines an aggressive timeline to select a location and develop a 50-bed facility, with a soft opening targeted for the latter part of 2025. Although concerns have been raised about the feasibility of the timeline, the center aims to provide respite for intoxicated individuals, offer deflection services to avoid criminal charges, and serve as a crucial resource in addressing substance use disorders and public safety concerns. Funding for the $25.2 million project is expected to come from various sources, including the county, state, and city governments.
